Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. Though it can never be considered a cure-all for obesity and is not in itself a substitute for good health practices, liposuction can help men and women achieve greater contour in their bodies, which can improve the way they look to others and the way they feel about themselves. We offer this procedure at Coastal Dermatology and Plastic Surgery center to help our patients achieve their aesthetic and weight loss goals. The History of Liposuction
The modern form of liposuction was perfected in the 1980s and would soon gain acceptance as a viable cosmetic procedure. Since its inception, the procedure has undergone major refinements that have made it safer and more efficient. In addition to standard liposuction, other forms of the procedure are available today, including a water-injection technique and methods that employ modern ultrasound and laser equipment. Liposuction is no longer a cosmetic procedure reserved only for the rich and famous.
Understanding the Procedure
Liposuction is a technique in which excess fat is literally “sucked away” from the body. The basic procedure uses a small tube, known as a cannula, and a suction device. Inserted through a small incision into the area being treated, the cannula is then moved about under the skin by the surgeon. The action breaks down the targeted fat cells, which are removed by the suction device.
The Benefits of Liposuction
The procedure is not designed to significantly reduce a person’s weight through the removal of large amounts of fat, which can actually be unhealthy. Instead, liposuction is designed to shape the body by removing pockets of fat that often accumulate in certain parts of the body. It is particularly effective in these areas:
- Face
- Upper arms
- Abdomen
- Buttocks
- Thighs
Undergoing the Liposuction Procedure
Liposuction can be performed in either a hospital or a medical office, and with the patient receiving either a local or a general anesthetic. The procedure itself can normally be completed within a couple of hours, after which the treated area will be covered in a compression garment to allow for healing. Recovery can take between one and three weeks, and patients can be expected to experience swelling, bruising and soreness in the affected area. However, the physical discomfort can normally be treated with over-the-counter medications.
Considering Liposuction
The procedure is best suited for men and women who are generally in good health, not excessively overweight and have been not been able to deal with their problem areas through other means. After the procedure, the fat cells that have been removed will not return. However, patients will still have to watch their weight to prevent such problems from developing elsewhere in their bodies.
