Laser Treatment for Scar Removal
The types of scarring which readily respond to laser therapy include:
- Atrophic scarring from acne, which appears like pin marks on the skin
- Hypertrophic scarring, which is firm to the touch and appears raised and pink
- Keloid scarring, which is firm, raised and red to reddish-purple in color
Types of Scar Revision Lasers
Fractionated radiofrequency treatments or Erbium YAG lasers treat a fraction of the skin’s surface. The lasers penetrate into the deeper layers in small regions. However, healthy skin borders each wound. The healthy cells replicate and the available blood supply repairs the treated areas.
CO2 and Erbium YAG lasers are sometimes used as an ablative process, which removes the top layer of skin. However, the CO2 laser is more abrasive. When using the erbium laser, thinner portions of skin are removed, which results in less damage and a decreased risk of damage done to the cells which cause pigmentation. The recovery time is also quicker.
Scar Revision Laser Process
The process begins with a local anesthetic to the affected area before the laser procedure. Once numb, the physician moves the laser along the scar. The length of time required for the procedure depends on the size and depth of the scar. As such, scar removal takes anywhere from 3 to 90 minutes. Patients might also require multiple procedures to achieve the best results. We will discuss these options during your consultation and outline what you can expect during your individualized procedure.
Post-Procedure Care
The procedure enables patients to return to their normal lives after leaving the office. Skin care of the site typically involves gentle cleansing with mild soap and water. Pat the skin dry and apply antibiotic ointment and a nonstick bandage if prescribed. Our physicians may also recommend a medicated cream to aid in the healing process. Cool compresses and OTC analgesics help reduce inflammation and ease any discomfort.
The skin commonly appears slightly burned for one to three days following a procedure. Symptoms include a slight redness and swelling. The treated skin eventually darkens and begins peeling. It is essential to wear protective clothing or apply sunscreen having a high SPF if outdoors during the healing process. Follow-up consults monitor the healing process or provide further treatment.
Possible Scar Removal Complications
The most frequent side effect of scar removal treatment is hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation of the treated site. During your initial consultation, we will assess multiple factors to ensure that this procedure is safe for you.
