Warts are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). For the most common warts on hands and feet, the virus is present in many common areas and can not be avoided (although wearing socks may minimize exposure). Warts are not dangerous, but can be contagious. Treatments include liquid nitrogen freezing, topical acid application, salicylic acid, injections, and podophyllin.
