Unexpected Benefits of Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, more commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, rejuvenates the eyes by removing the hooding skin and excess fat.  Occasionally, doctors at Coastal Dermatology & Plastic Surgery complement it with procedures such as a brow lift, skin resurfacing treatment, or fat grafting to further achieve natural-looking results. Meanwhile, here is a list of some of the unexpected benefits of blepharoplasty.

Create a More Youthful and More Alert Appearance

Upper eyelid surgery removes the excess skin that can make anyone look perennially tired or sleepy. This is typically done through the natural skin fold for optimal scar concealment. Occasionally, the surgeon also removes a small amount of fat and muscle to further “open up the eyes” and make them more youthful and more alert.  For some patients, tightening the levator muscle, which is responsible for lifting the upper lid, is another critical step to achieve their desired results.

Improve Your Peripheral Vision

An upper lid that sags too low may obstruct your peripheral vision.  In this situation, the drooping lid that is the culprit behind your obstructed view can be corrected through eyelid surgery.

Eliminate the Under-Eye Bags

During lower blepharoplasty, our surgeon removes and/or redistributes the excess fat.  But if you also have excess skin, another method may be used.

Youthful Transition Between the Lid and Cheek

Occasionally, a facelift is combined with lower lid surgery to ensure a smooth junction between the lid and cheek.  To further promote natural transition, fat grafting or fat injection may be performed as a complementary procedure. Simply put, some facelift patients may need simultaneous eyelid surgery to avoid surgical stigmata, particularly the abrupt lid-cheek transition.

Eyelid Surgery and Perceived Personality Traits

While there is no evidence suggesting that certain facial features are linked to characteristics, a 2015 study published by JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery journal has suggested that patients who had lower eyelid surgery scored higher in perceived personality traits such as attractiveness and femininity compared to their “before” photos. The researchers have concluded that eliminating the tired or angry appearance of the eyes could improve one’s perceived personality traits.

Take Years Off Your Face

According to a study published in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, patients who had facial plastic surgery such as blepharoplasty, facelifts, and brow lifts had a mean of 7.2-year reduction in perceived age. The study involved 60 patients whose before-and-after photos were rated by 40 first-year medical students.
