What to Expect from Chemical Peels in Los Alamitos

Chemical peels involve a special solution being applied to your skin, so its surface is removed, revealing the new skin that has a better texture, tone, and appearance than the old skin.  The doctors at Coastal Dermatology & Plastic Surgery use different types and strengths of chemical peels based on your skin condition.

Reasons for Getting Chemical Peels

While chemical peels are more commonly performed on the face, they are also used to improve the skin of the neck, back of the hands, and shoulders. This treatment can:

1.  Minimize the appearance of fine wrinkles caused by photoaging, i.e., cumulative effects of sun damage
2.  Treat certain types of acne
3.  Diminish the appearance of age spots, sunspots, freckles, and dark patches that may stem from sun damage, pregnancy, hormonal changes, and the use of birth control pills
4.  Minimize the appearance of mild acne scars
5.  Improve the overall texture and look of the skin

Your Treatment

Specific instructions may differ from patient to patient and the type of chemical peels (mild, medium, or deep peels).  Nonetheless, there are general rules of thumb. During a consultation, our doctor may ask about your medical history, skin care regimen, lifestyle (smoking and sun exposure), and drug allergies.  In no way should you hide or omit information during the discussion with our dermatologist.

Chemical peels are done in the comfort of our office in Los Alamitos. Before our doctor or aesthetician applies one or more chemical solutions, he or she will first clean your skin thoroughly. Take note that sun protection is critical in the months following your chemical peel to prevent hyperpigmentation (dark spots), redness, and signs of photoaging.  After all, your new skin is extra sensitive to UV rays.
